The present study analyses the work The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood, through a critical view of gender studies. First, I define the text as a dystopic novel, belonging to the Science Fiction genre. Hereby, I point the ways in which we are able to find the defining characteristics of such genres inside the work. Then, I relate the way women are portrayed in the narrative with the predominantly patriarchal culture of the society in which we are inserted; exposing the direct connection between the stereotype of women in our current society and the categories created in the plot. Finally, I extend this criticism to the legislative aspect, drawing a parallel between Gilead's authoritarian regime and the translation of Reproductive Rights...
